How to Hit a Draw
63
The draw is the one shot that almost every golfer is looking to be able to hit consistently. Why? Well, it goes farther than a fade does and the pros play it. For some, the draw is like holy grail of golf shots and in this hub, I'll teach you how to hit it consistently. (Just a note, I have another hub that I wrote about how to hit a fade, too. If you're interested in that, give it a look!)
Step One: Align properly. I know that I mentioned that in my last article, but I really can't stress the importance of this enough. Aiming properly can be the difference between a ten foot birdie putt and a three foot knee-knocker to save par. Make sure that you aim right of the target. Obviously, the degree of your draw will determine how much.
Step Two: Pick the right club. If you're going to hit a draw and your natural shot is a fade, then you might want to take one less club because the ball is going to go further. This happens because when draw movement is put on the ball, it creates topspin. This topspin cuts down on the air resistance as it's flying through the air. Secondly, the topspin will create more roll once it hits the fairway and that will make it travel greater distances.
Step Three: Close your stance. Closing your stance helps the force the club into an inside-out path. This path helps to create the right-to-left shot that you're looking for.
This is it! This is a basic overview of how to hit the draw, but many of you will find that once you get onto the driving range or the course, that you'll have to tinker with some of these steps. For example, I tend to use my hands a little bit more to help create the draw that I'm looking for. All it takes is practice and soon enough, you'll be out there hitting booming drives off the tee.
